The HR/VP Kaja Kallas met today with Pope Francis and among other topics they discussed Russia’s war in Ukraine and the need for a just and lasting peace that ensures Ukraine’s future. EU Ambassador Martin Selmayr accompanied the HR/VP to the Vatican where she also met with the Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin and with Archbishop Paul Gallagher (equivalent to Foreign Minister).

The EU and the Holy See have close relations since 55 years and have common areas of interest such as the fight against climate change and hunger in the world, strengthening the rules-based multilateral system and promoting global framework for human-centric artificial intelligence. Both will continue and develop the structured dialogue on foreign policy and global issues.

During her visit to Rome, Ambassador Martin Selmayr also welcomed for the first time the HR/VP to Villa Europa, the new premises of the EU Delegation in Rome.
