Tackling a ‘perfect storm’ of humanitarian crises: Expanding the resource base in the face of exploding needs while strengthening resilience

08.09.2022

Please join us for an in-depth conversation between humanitarian actors, countries affected by the crises, and donors to take stock and sketch out possible avenues for the way ahead.

Co-chaired by:

  • H.E. Mr. Janez Lenarčič, EU Commissioner for Crisis Management
  • H.E. Ms. Retno Marsudi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Indonesia (TBC)

The event is organised in cooperation with UN OCHA, with participation of:

  • H.E. Mr. Martin Griffiths, UN Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator, OCHA

The past decade has seen a steep and constant rise in humanitarian needs around the world. On top of this, in 2022, the combined impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing wars (and their knock-on effects in areas such as food insecurity), and the worsening global climate emergency has created a ‘perfect storm’ of crises, resulting in an explosion in humanitarian needs that is unprecedented in its scale and suddenness.

The objective of this high-level side event is to reflect collectively on the steps to be taken in the short and the long-term that could contribute to alleviating the dramatic gap between needs and available resources.

The event will discuss how to identify strategies for significantly expanding the donor base and ensuring more balanced and sustainable contributions for humanitarian action from a broad range of countries. It will also highlight the importance of community-level resilience as a necessary strategy to complement (and lessen the need for) emergency humanitarian response.
