Ambassador of the EU to Ukraine, Katarína Mathernová, arrived in Kyiv in September 2023. The Ambassador represents the European Union in its diplomatic engagements and cooperation with Ukraine in these crucial times when the country is defending its European future and our joint values against the brutal full-scale aggression of Russia. Ambassador has worked with Ukraine since 2015, contributing to comprehensive reform process. A process that is actively ongoing despite the war and lays the foundations for Ukraine’s future accession into the EU.

Message from the Ambassador

Dear Ukrainian friends,

I would like to start my message by thanking the Ukrainian Defenders. It is thanks to their bravery that I can be in Kyiv, the glorious capital of free Ukraine.

I am lucky not to be a stranger to your magnificent country.

Since 2015, I have worked with Ukraine on crucial reforms sparkled by the Revolution of Dignity.

Fight against corruption, judicial reform, energy efficiency and security, building an investment climate that makes the Ukrainian economy fit for a prosperous future – all these have been my priorities over almost a decade.

I am proud to have contributed to the fundament on which Ukraine now firmly stands.

For the next years, it will be my privilege and honour to serve as Ambassador of the European Union to Ukraine, at this crucial time.

A time, when Ukraine is repelling Russia’s illegal war of aggression.

A time, when your country is reforming in order to take its rightful place in the European family.

Looking ahead at my mandate, I would like to share some of my priorities with you:

  • I will make sure that EU assistance for Ukraine’s war effort continues to be managed in the best possible way. As Team Europe, we have already mobilised more than 82 billion euro.
  • I will do my outmost to support Ukraine's reform process as an EU candidate country. The future of Ukraine is in our Union.
  • I will help advance recovery and rebuilding through the EU’s powerful instruments. So that children could go to schools, people could go to work and their homes could be safe.
  • I will work as part of a strong community of Ukraine's friends and supporters – in Kyiv, in Brussels, and internationally.
  • I will work with Ukraine's democratic institutions, your business community and vibrant civil society. I will work together with the Ukrainian citizens who make sure that their country strives, while its heroic defenders are advancing towards victory.

Together we will succeed. I firmly believe in this, because together, we are Europe.

Слава Україні!
