Tunisia-EU: Metline municipality embarks on selective waste sorting with EU support
It is a campaign to support local actors, this time those of Cap Zbib, to preserve the environment with the involvement of students and for the first time the scouts and raise awareness of the importance of respecting nature.
Eleven selective waste sorting bins were set up at the school and on the beach of Cap Zbib, during the event organised in Metline on November 30, by the EU delegation in Tunisia, in the presence of EU Ambassador to Tunisia Marcus Cornaro.
The event follows a series of clean-up and nature conservation awareness actions called EuBeachCleanup.
During this event, a play on the environment was staged and a training session for pupils on waste sorting was organised by the Association Tunisie Recyclage.
These actions are aimed at supporting and involving Tunisian actors, especially local ones (municipality, scouts, students) to act for the preservation of the natural environment.
The environment and natural landscape in the Cap Zebib region, a wild area rich in marine biodiversity, is magnificent and deserves to be protected and preserved from all threats of pollution and erosion.
Located on the northern coast of Tunisia, Cap Zebib closes the bay of Bizerte on the eastern side. In this still wild and magical place, you will find the Cani islets which are among the most interesting scuba diving sites in the Mediterranean.
Despite its rich marine biodiversity and ecological potential, the Cap Zebib area has not been zoned for protection according to the Important Marine Mammal Areas (IMMA) criteria.
"It was proposed as an important area for marine mammals, but this proposal was not retained for lack of regular monitoring data on the distribution of dolphins," explained WWF-North Africa marine programme officer Mehdi Aissi.
Raising the awareness of local actors and citizens and involving them in the protection of the whole area and its surroundings from pollution is therefore of great importance.
For the record, For our Planet campaign is a joint initiative of the European Commission and the European External Action Service (EEAS) to rally support for nature and climate action in the coming years.
