Thailand: Statement by the Spokesperson on the adoption of the Marriage Equality Act
The European Union congratulates Thailand on passing the Marriage Equality Act and welcomes this step, which enshrines into law the equal recognition of relationships for same-sex couples. With the passing of this act, Thailand becomes the first Southeast Asian country recognising same-sex unions. Thailand’s steady progress in embracing diversity, promoting equality, and standing for love and acceptance establishes a positive example in the region.
The commitment to upholding non-discrimination, gender equality, and respect for human rights is shared by the EU and Thailand and it is affirmed in our Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) signed on 14 December 2022.
The European Union encourages Thailand to continue upholding and advancing the fundamental right to freedom of expression without discrimination on any ground. The EU looks forward to further strengthening its relations with Thailand under the PCA on issues of human rights and pluralism in support of more diverse and inclusive societies.
