Rural Electrification Programme – Support to Turnkey III in Tanzania

The project seeks to improve livelihoods and foster social and economic development in rural areas through the provision of access to electricity.

 

ACTIVITIES

  • Roll out national rural electrification plan in selected villages.
  • Preparation of tender documents and selection of contractors for rural electrification.
  • Monitoring and supervision of programme operations (grid extension and customer connections).
  • Promote use of electricity for productive purposes in rural areas.
  • Electrification of rural water and health facilities through grid electricity and renewable energy systems.
  • Strengthen capacities of REA, TANESCO and RUWASA in planning, monitoring and supervising rural electrification projects.
  • Connection of poor rural households using ready-made internal wiring boards (ready-boards).

 

EXPECTED RESULTS/IMPACT

  • Approximately 3,559 villages in rural regions of Tanzania gain access to electricity.
  • 193,306 new customers are connected with electricity including households, businesses, and public buildings, benefiting a total population of more than l million people.
  • At least 63 health facilities and 363 water supply schemes in rural areas connected to grid electricity and renewable energy systems.
  • Strengthened technical capacities within REA, TANESCO and RUWASA to prepare, design, monitor and supervise rural electrification projects and ensure an appropriate level of performance in operations and maintenance of the lines once they enter into operation.
  • Improved health services and water supply in rural areas leading to the prevention of infectious diseases, including COVID-19.
