The European Union Allocates TZS 396.2 million to support Tanzania’s response to Marburg Outbreak

In response to the recent outbreak of Marburg Virus Disease in Tanzania, the European Union (EU) has allocated TZS 396.2 million (€150,000) in humanitarian aid funding, to support the country’s efforts in mitigating the spread of the deadly virus, which poses a significant risk to over 2.98 million people.

The emergency response project will run for four months, until the end of May 2025, and is expected to reach over 1.47 million people in the region of Kagera. The EU funding will bolster the efforts of the Tanzanian Red Cross in providing much-needed relief related to healthcare services, hygiene promotion, community engagement, and risk communication.

The response will also incorporate inclusive measures to address the specific needs of vulnerable groups including the elderly and persons with disabilities.

Tanzania confirmed an outbreak of Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) in Kagera Region on 20 January 2025.This is the country's second outbreak, following a 2023 outbreak in the same region.

The funding is part of the EU’s overall contribution to the Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

The outbreak presents additional challenges due to cross-border movements, increasing the need for logistical support. Tanzania is simultaneously managing other public health concerns, including Mpox in 10 regions and a cholera outbreak across all 31 regions.
