EU supports the public hearing of the Media Law in Tajikistan
In the Republic of Tajikistan, the activities of the media are regulated mainly by two laws - the Law of the Republic of Tajikistan “On Periodicals and Other Mass Media” and the Law of the Republic of Tajikistan “On Television and Radio Broadcasting”.
Despite changes and amendment to these laws, technological developments and international obligations push us to further align these laws to international standards.
Therefore, in March 2023, by the decision of the Committee of the Majlisi Namoyandagon of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan on International Affairs, Public Associations and Information, a Working Group was created to develop the draft Law of the Republic of Tajikistan “On the Media”. The Working Group included representatives of government bodies and civil society, who studied the experience of different countries, conducted analysis of legislative acts regulating the activities of the media.
The working group has developed the structure of the draft of the new Law of the Republic of Tajikistan “On the Media,” and held public discussions with representatives of civil society, the media and lawyers in the Sughd, Khatlon regions and Dushanbe City.
As a result of these consultations, about 100 comments were received, separately reviewed and discussed again by the Working Group.
The purpose of the next meeting is to have a discussion over the draft law with a wider range of government bodies, representatives of the Parliament of the Republic of Tajikistan, international, public and journalist organizations.
The conference is organized by the Committee of the Majlisi Namoyandagon of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan on International Affairs, Public Associations and Information in cooperation with the Public Organization “Khoma” and the support of the European Union.
