EU Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations Department
The European Union and its Member States are one of the world's leading donors of humanitarian aid. Relief assistance is an expression of European solidarity with people in need all around the world. It aims to save lives, prevent and alleviate human suffering, and safeguard the integrity and human dignity of populations affected by disasters and crises. Through the European Commission’s Civil Protection and Humanitarian aid Operations department, the European Union helps millions of victims of conflict and disasters around the world every year. With headquarters in Brussels and a global network of field offices, the EU provides assistance to the most vulnerable people on the basis of humanitarian needs.
In Türkiye the EU has supported 95 humanitarian projects contracted with 23 partner organisations since 2015, in close coordination with the Turkish authorities. EU humanitarian programmes help the most vulnerable refugees and their host communities receive the support they need, including cash assistance to cover their basic needs, education in emergencies, specialised healthcare services. protection including registration, legal counselling, psychosocial support and access to civil documentation.
Turkey has also been a participating state to the EU Civil Protection Mechanism since 2005. Established in 2001, the Mechanism aims to strengthen the cooperation between the participating states on civil protection to improve prevention, preparedness, and response to disasters.
