14th EU Human Rights Short Film Competition Receives Record Number of Entries. 14th Human Rights Film Days will take place from the 10th to the 15th of December
Film Days, Screenings and Events
This year, 24 feature-length and short European films focussing on human rights, all previously unreleased in Türkiye, will be screened with the support of the diplomatic missions of EU member states and the EU National Institutes for Culture. Screenings will take place from the 10th to the 15th of December 2024 at the Ankara Kızılay Büyülü Fener Cinema and will be available on the Festival Scope online screening platform.
All screenings will be free of charge and open to the public. The films can be seen with Turkish and English subtitles, as well as Turkish captions when viewed online. Q&A sessions will be held at the cinema, and recordings of the interviews with the directors will be available over the online screening platform. The award-winning films of the 14th EU Human Rights Short Film Competition will be screened at the cinema as part of the 14th EU Human Rights Film Days.
Record Number of Entries
This year, the EU Human Rights Short Film Competition received an impressive 305 entries, setting a new record and surpassing last year's total of 235 submissions.
Jury Assessment
The pre-selection jury, comprising Assoc. Prof. Önder Özdem (Başkent University), Sibel Tekin (Documentary Film Director, Hacettepe University) and Andreas Treske (Media Artist, Bilkent University) faced the challenging task of selecting the worthy finalists. The jury selected 10 short films as finalists for the Human Rights Award, along with five short films each for the Gender Equality and Climate Crisis Special Awards.
The final jury, comprising Dr Ayça Çitçi (Istanbul Bilgi University), Nayat Karaköse (Hrant Dink Foundation), Nil Kural (Cinema Writer and Film Programmer), Erdem Şenocak (Actor), and Deniz Tortum (Director), will evaluate the 20 finalist films and determine the award recipients.
Awards Ceremony
The 14th EU Human Rights Short Film Competition winners will be announced at the awards ceremony, which will be hosted by the Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Türkiye, Ambassador Thomas Hans Ossowski, in Ankara on the 13 of December. Representatives of diplomatic missions, the art community, academics, non-governmental organisations and members of the media will attend the ceremony.
