    The European Union reiterates its steadfast support for the Sudanese people. We are working with a variety of implementing partners: UN agencies, local and international NGOs and European aid agencies.

    We have adapted our EU initiatives to cope better in the context of the conflict and new assistance programmes will be launched with the sole aim of serving the people of Sudan in these challenging times.

The EU supports the continuation of the production of gum Arabic, the unique natural product of Sudan

Acacia trees in Sudan provide 80% of the global supply of gum Arabic. This raw material is essential for the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food and beverage industries, in particular to forming the basis for sparkling or carbonated drinks. As such, gum Arabic is in high demand by multinational firms.

The challenges to guarantee human conditions in prisons in Sudan

In 2021 Penal Reform International (PRI) assessed humanitarian conditions at 12 detention facilities in Sudan. The findings confirmed that these centres were overcrowded and that rehabilitation and reintegration programmes are absent. The need to support the reform of the prison system in the country was clear. A 3-year EU funded project implemented by Penal Reform International commenced to provide appropriate infrastructures and services guaranteeing a human rights-based environment protecting the dignity of the prisoners, especially women.

The EU continues its support to enhance food security in Sudan

Subject to the world's largest hunger crisis, Sudan is experiencing a catastrophic crisis in which half of the country -around 26 million- faces acute hunger. In these harsh conditions and with the objective of mitigating the rising risks, the European Union just launched an initiative in cooperation with ZOA International to enhance food security. The areas of intervention are the eastern territories of Gedaref and Kassala.
