It’s About Time - the Travelling History Museum is coming to Galle

"It's About Time" is a travelling history museum that explores different ways in which we connect with Sri Lanka's incredibly rich history. The museum is trilingual in its presentation and offers a new experience for audiences from all age groups. We warmly invite you to visit the museum with your friends and family! “It’s about Time” will be stopping in Galle from the 05th to the 12th of February 2025, at the Town Hall, Galle. Doors open from 08:00 am to 05:00 pm. This is a free event, everyone is welcome.

'It's About Time' (IAT) Traveling History Museum in Galle marks the 6th stop of the museum in its tour across the country. The museum has in the last two years been seen by over 25,000 people in Kandy, Kurunegala, Badulla, Batticaloa and Mannar. The museum provides visitors with an educational and interactive experience that goes beyond the history books, bringing history to life. Dive deep into multiple historical narratives, rediscover our roots, and reflect on your role in crafting our country’s legacy.

The museum’s visit to Galle is scheduled to coincide with the popular Galle Literary Festival (GLF) from 6 to 9 February 2025, offering visitors to Galle the opportunity of seeing both GLF and IAT together. Furthermore, the exciting collaboration between IAT and GLF will feature an input on addressing innovations in museum spaces from a representative of the Collective for Historical Dialogue and Memory (CHDM), one of the partners of the It’s About Time initiative at the Galle Literary Festival.

“It’s About Time – the Travel History Museum connects us with the personal experiences of real Sri Lankans throughout the country’s recent past. It allows visitors to connect with the different perspectives, losses and longings of members of the community and provides a space for reflection on how to build the future together”, highlights the European Union Ambassador, Carmen Moreno. Emphasizing the European Union’s and Germany’s shared commitment to promoting innovative approaches in Sri Lanka for social cohesion, H.E. Dr.  Neumann says that “this Traveling History Museum is an opportunity for people to see and hear lived experiences. This gives life to events and narratives which people can relate to, thereby, showing that lived experiences of the people in different parts of the country can be similar and relatable.”

The It’s About Time Traveling History Museum is implemented by Search for Common Ground (SFCG) with the Collective for Historical Dialogue & Memory (CHDM) playing a technical advisory role. The initiative is supported by the Strengthening Social Cohesion and Peace in Sri Lanka (SCOPE) program, co-funded by the European Union and German Federal Foreign Office and is implemented by GIZ in partnership with the Government of Sri Lanka.

The It’s About Time Traveling History Museum was designed and piloted by CHDM’s predecessor Historical Dialogue, which was part of the Strengthening Reconciliation Processes in Sri Lanka (SRP) program.  SRP was the predecessor program of SCOPE, and was also co-funded by the European Union and German Federal Foreign Office.
