Joint Press Release by The European Union, the Ministry of Electricity and Energy and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition on Global Gateway: European Union supports South Africa’s Green Hydrogen ambitions

A milestone in SA–EU relations: united in our ambition for a just energy transition, the EU will make available R628 million to promote the sustainable development of the green hydrogen value chains in South Africa. This will create new economic opportunities and boost domestic growth.

As part of a full programme in South Africa, European Union Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson met with Minister for Energy and Electricity Kgosientsho Ramogkopa and Minister for Trade, Industry and Competition Parks Tau. Discussions focused on the on-going collaboration between the European Union and South Africa regarding the just energy transition and the sustainable development of strategic value chains, including on Green Hydrogen. Commissioner Simson announced financial support worth R628 million (€32 million) to South Africa to develop the green hydrogen value chain in line with the country’s priorities of adding value to the domestic economy and ramping up its green industrialisation.

During her visit, Com Simson also met with a number of additional key stakeholders, including business associations that advise the National Energy Crisis Committee (NECOM) responsible for the implementation of South Africa’s Presidential Energy Action Plan, the Presidential Climate Commission and representatives of civil society, labour, business and government.
