The earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria: the EU emergency assistance
Türkiye:
The EU has already made available significant support to Türkiye through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism:
➡️ 21 EU Member States and 3 UCPM Participating States offered 38 response teams, consisting of 1 652 persons and 105 search and rescue dogs.
➡️ 12 EU Member States have provided shelter items
➡️ The Commission's Emergency Response Coordination Centre has mobilised 500 Relief Housing Units from the rescEU reserve (hosted by Sweden), as well as 2 000 tents and 8 000 beds hosted by Romania to be deployed to Türkiye.
➡️ An EU Civil Protection team of 11 experts has deployed to support the local and national authorities with the coordination of incoming EU assistance.
Syria:
➡️ EU humanitarian partners have been supporting search and rescue efforts since day one.
➡️ The Commission has provided €3.5 million in immediate emergency assistance.
➡️ The Commission is channelling offers of assistance via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, in close collaboration with the United Nations.
➡️ EU stockpiles in Italy and Dubai have been mobilised to deliver emergency supplies. It includes items such as winterised tents, heaters, blankets, water, sanitation and hygiene kits and kitchen sets.
➡️ 10 European countries (Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Finland, Germany, Greece, Italy, Romania, Slovenia, and Norway) offered emergency assistance via EU Civil Protection Mechanism
In the upcoming days the EU will provide additional support for more shelter capacity - in particular tents, blankets, heaters. The EU is also mobilising the private sector to increase the capacity to deliver the necessary support as rapidly as possible.
Beyond rapid emergency assistance, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen will host a Donor's Conference (in Brussels in March), together with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, to mobilise funds from the international community in support for the people of Türkiye and Syria.
