Forest4Life Paraguay

15.01.2025

Paraguay is a country with abundant natural resources, and its economy depends on them, especially land (used in agribusiness and livestock), and water for hydroelectric production. Dependence on natural resources creates conditions of vulnerability to the adverse effects of climate change.

To reduce this vulnerability and make the country more resilient, Forest4Life will work on reducing the incidence and extent of extreme forest fires, and improving the effectiveness and sustainability of forests and other key ecosystems management and conservation in three selected protected areas. In addition, sustainable forestry, livestock and agricultural practices will be promoted in buffer zones.

Scope

1. Mbaracayú Forest Natural Reserve

2. San Rafael or Tekoha Guasu National Park Reserve

3. Chaco Biosphere Reserve

Beneficiaries

  • 3 protected wilderness areas and their stakeholders (park rangers, indigenous communities, administrators, volunteer fire brigades)
  • 8 to 11 municipalities located in the buffer zones around the 3 protected wild areas, and their stakeholders (public authorities, producers' organisations)

Expected results

  • Satellite observation kits available and employed by public institutions to identify and prioritise most vulnerable areas to forest fires.
  • In most vulnerable areas to forest fires, local communities and volunteer fire brigades have been trained in forest fire prevention, detection and rapid response practices.
  • All 3 protected areas have completed management plans based on updated data and continuous monitoring that respond to the specific needs of each area.
  • In all 3 protected areas, the basic infrastructure for visitor management and conservation activities has been improved, without affecting the integrity of the ecosystems.
  • Within the 3 protected areas, key areas for biodiversity and water recharge have been reforested and restored.
  • In 8 to 11 municipalities, agricultural and livestock products with potential for improvement towards sustainable production have been analyzed, and models have been developed and shared with stakeholders to establish fair value chains.
  • Working platforms established in each municipality linked to the project to plan, monitor and maintain the sustainable use of buffer zones.
