European Union Green Diplomacy Week 2024 in Papua New Guinea
EU Green Diplomacy Weeks aim to promote dialogue and cooperation on the issue of climate change, protection of the environment, forest and biodiversity, highlighting success stories. It is a world-wide campaign that encourages conversations around climate. The objective of the 2024 Green Diplomacy Week in Papua New Guinea is to encourage youth participation and leadership. The audience comprises mainly youths and students from the National Capital District.
In his opening speech, European Union Ambassador Fradin stated: “The EU is committed to working with partners around the globe to address challenges and the necessary green transition. In Papua New Guinea, the EU has been a long-standing partner on climate and environmental action through initiatives like the EU-FCCB and EU-STREIT programmes. We are delighted to dedicate this year’s Green diplomacy week to youth leadership.”
The event, organised by the EU-funded Forestry-Climate Change-Biodiversity (EU-FCCB) Programme in collaboration with the EU Delegation, happens from 11-13 December at the Moresby Arts Theatre. It brings together leaders, experts, and mainly youths to highlight the importance of addressing global environmental challenges. The event was opened by H.E. Jacques Fradin, EU Ambassador to Papua New Guinea and Honourable Powes Parkop, NCD Governor, who is the Guest Speaker. It was followed by the screening of “Into the Jungle” documentary film. A post-screening discussion with conservationists delved into the challenges and opportunities in safeguarding biodiversity, underscoring the vital role of local communities in conservation efforts. Further selected films are being screened to raise awareness and encourage participation. A Panel Discussion on “Youth Leadership in Climate Action and Sustainability” took place. Young environmental leaders and the EU Ambassador will shared insights on empowering the next generation to lead biodiversity and climate advocacy efforts, including through direct opportunities such as scholarships launched at this occasion by the EU-FCCB Programme.
