EU Support to Rural Entrepreneurship, Investment and Trade in Papua New Guinea (STREIT PNG)
The European Union 'Support to Rural Entrepreneurship, Investment and Trade in Papua New Guinea' (EU-STREIT PNG) programmes is the largest grant-funded initiative of the EU in the country and in the Pacific. The programme aims to help improve the lives of the people from East Sepik and Sandaun provinces of Papua New Guinea, by focusing on increasing sustainable inclusive economic development of rural areas through improved economic returns and opportunities from cocoa, vanilla and fishery value chains while strenghtening and improving the efficiency of value chain enablers, including the business environment, and supporting sustainable, climate-proof transport and energy infrastructure development.

KEY EXPECTED RESULTS
- Increased volume, value and improved quality of cocoa, vanilla and fisheries products,
- More value addition and an increased number of people and enterprises engaging in and benefiting from improved value chain development

- Increased number of people employed, agripreneurs and micro, small and medium enterprises engaged in the selected value chains benefiting from reduced transaction costs and time,

ACHIEVEMENTS
- Assistance to 72, 600 households, 434, 000 people and partnership with over 730 farmer groups
- Training provided to 23,300 cocoa, vanilla & fisheries lead farmers
- Empowerment of over 520 nurseries by providing them with nursery materials (including 2,000,000 polybags), and planting almost 1,100,000 cocoa seedlings that ensure the quality and quantity of cocoa in the region.
- Establishment of 13 vanilla treatment sheds, and distribution of 111,700 healthy vanilla vines that will improve vanilla production
- Improvement of inland fish farming by providing 31,000 fingerlings and building the capacity of aquaculture.
- 11 farm to market roads (170km) have been contracted for rehabilitation by contractors, using decent work employment conditions...
- Opening of 95,300 bank accounts and 204 Bank Access Points
- Installation of 5 Solar Sites at public facilities
- Establishment of 4 Digital Resource Centers.
