Raising awareness about impact of media and peer violence through play
In collaboration with actress Žana Gardašević Bulatović and Young European Ambassadors, Europe House celebrated Information and Media Literacy Week with a theatre play and a workshop.
The play “Look Inside Yourself” explores the causes and consequences of peer violence, with a particular focus on digital violence, which is increasingly prevalent in the technological era. The play draws attention to this growing issue, while also highlighting the importance of media literacy in combating information manipulation and protecting young people in the digital environment.
Playwright Žana Gardašević explained to us whether, and how often, we are willing to “look inside ourselves.”
“The title of the play is no coincidence. I feel we greatly lack that kind of introspection,” said Gardašević.
The actress also added that as a society we don’t possess a high level of media literacy and that partially contributes to the high occurrence of violence.
In addition to the play, a workshop was organised at Europe House. The workshop was led by journalist and Young European Ambassador Anđela Micić. Through discussions with participants she illustrated the significance of the role of media.
“Through the workshop, we tried to convey the importance, but also the responsibilities of media. Media is shaping social reality and forming young people’s opinions,” said Micić. She added that this was a wonderful experience, and that she believes this is the start of our shared mission to create a safe community, a community tailored to young people, who are the most important members of society.
Information and Media Literacy Week is marked from 24 to 31 October and encourages discussions and the exchange of ideas on enhancing media literacy within society. This event was an opportunity to provide young people with a chance to explore and understand the challenges of the modern media environment through creative and educational formats, as well as to equip them with tools for responsible and critical thinking regarding the information they are exposed to daily.
