Road to Schuman event in Moldova: paving the path towards a stronger, resilient and more secure Moldova

On 30 April, in Chisinau, the EU Delegation to the Republic of Moldova organized a Road to Schuman event titled “The European Union and the Republic of Moldova: geopolitical complexities and the repercussions of Russia´s war of aggression in Ukraine on Moldova”, gathering more than 80 experts in the field and institutions representatives. This initiative is part of the Road to Schuman events that will inform the discussions for the second edition of the Schuman Security and Defence Forum, that will take place in Brussels on 28-29 May.

The outcome of the Road to Schuman event in Moldova was to generate momentum and a consolidated assessment of the security situation, thus contributing to the content of the Schuman Forum in Brussels.

The seminar provided a platform for dialogue, exchange views on specific regional security challenges and, potentially, on policy recommendations, with the participation of Moldovan authorities, members of the diplomatic community from partner countries, leading think-tankers, academia and journalists. The seminar enabled an assessment of the main defence challenges, how various actors address them and share views on shaping and enhancing partnership with the EU in defence and security segments.

“Moldova has shown resilience and capitalized on opportunities, thanks to the support of the European Union and its allies during last two years of Russia´s unjustified war in Ukraine. Initiatives like the European Peace Facility have bolstered Moldova's defence capabilities, leading to a doubling of its defence budget, and thus improving a defence capacity. Significantly intensified security and defence cooperation with Moldova over the last two years will be soon be elevated to a new strategic level.  Together, we continue to pave the path towards a stronger, resilient and more secure future for Moldova”, said Jānis Mažeiks, EU Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova.
