European Cinema as a Bridge Between Cultures

The Delegation of the European Union to Malaysia together with Member State Embassies, European Embassies and the Malaysian International Film Festival (MIFF) hosted a European Cinema Night to celebrate European cinema and its role as a bridge between cultures.

The Delegation of European Union to Malaysia collaborated with the Malaysian International Film Festival (MIFF) to celebrate European cinema during Malaysia’s biggest and most prominent film festival by hosting a European Cinema Night. Next to all the EU Member States present in Malaysia, also the Norwegian Embassy, the Embassy of Ukraine, and the Embassy of Switzerland participated in bringing this special night into fruition. 

The European Cinema Night provided a platform for meaningful dialogue, reinforcing the role of cinema as a bridge between cultures. Deputy Head of Delegation, Mr Timo Goosmann in his address highlighted this spectacular collaboration as a testament to the presence of European cinema in Malaysia. The European Cinema Night brought together filmmakers, actors and film enthusiasts alike together to engage in discussions on shared values and aspirations of Europe and Malaysia in using cinema as a tool for positive change.

This event was held as an encore event to the 7th Annual Malaysia Golden Global Awards (MGGA) night where 11 films with European participation, representing Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czechia, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Spain were part of the nominees and winners. German production Every Me Every You (German: Alle die Du bist) won three of the eight available awards, namely the ‘Best Screenplay’, ‘Best Film’ and ‘Best Actress’. Lead actress Aenne Schwarz had the honor to receive the awards personally on stage of the MGGA. The three awards to Every Me Every You is a display of the impact and quality of European Cinema assessed by an international jury.

Other European co- or fully produced films screened during the eight-day festival included In The Land of Brothers, Rapture, Sujo, The Editorial Office, The Great Phuket, Perfect Days, Anatomy of a Fall, Salli, Hood Witch and Forest Killer. The featured films showcased a unique glimpse into the culture, history and contemporary issues of their country of origin, offering Malaysian audiences an opportunity to experience the diversity of European cinema.
