The EU Delegation and Lao PDR launch Vientiane Heritage Route to preserve cultural legacy and boost tourism

Vientiane, December 18, 2024 – The Delegation of the European Union (EU), the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism (MoICT), the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MPWT), and the Vientiane Municipality, officially launched the Vientiane Heritage Route project at Patuxay Park. The project aims to preserve and promote Vientiane’s rich architectural heritage and to increase its tourism potential.
The event was opened by Mrs. Suanesavanh Vignaket, Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism, and Mr. Niall Leonard, Chargé d’Affaires of the European Union Delegation to Lao PDR. It was attended by representatives from diplomatic missions in Vientiane, and a range of other partners.
The Vientiane Heritage Route showcases 59 historical buildings in Lao and foreign architectural styles, reflecting the city’s history and charm. It uses a map, an interactive website, and an e-brochure to give tourists and locals a memorable experience.
The database, e-brochure, map, website, and other promotional materials, which serve as key tools for conservation and sustainable development initiatives in the city have been officially handed over to the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism. These resources aim to promote tourism, enhance local outreach efforts, and provide accessible information for visitors.
During the ceremony, the European Union in Laos, the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism, and other partners, took a classic tuk-tuk tour along the Vientiane Heritage Route to celebrate and promote the city’s cultural treasures.
Cultural heritage is a basis for social cohesion, economic growth, and national identity. The Vientiane Heritage Route project shows the EU’s commitment to preserving Vientiane’s heritage while promoting the city as a sustainable tourism destination. The EU and Lao PDR work together to protect cultural treasures for future generations.
