Kuwait Diplomatic Institute and College of Europe Sign Memorandum of Understanding in Bruges to Strengthen Diplomatic Training and Cooperation
The Saud AlNasser AlSabah Kuwait Diplomatic Institute has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the College of Europe in Bruges to strengthen diplomatic training and cooperation. This high-level event was attended by Assistant Foreign Minister for Kuwait Diplomatic Institute Ambassador Nasser S. Al-Sabeeh, College of Europe Rector Federica Mogherini, European Union Ambassador to Kuwait Anne Koistinen and Ambassador of the State of Kuwait to the Kingdom of Belgium and the EU Ambassador Nawaf Alenezi.
The MoU aims to promote ongoing collaboration between the European Union and Kuwait in enhancing diplomatic training, fostering the exchange of expertise, and addressing global challenges. These include climate change, women’s empowerment, peace and security, human rights, cybersecurity, as well as border diplomacy.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Assistant Foreign Minister for Kuwait Diplomatic Institute H.E. Ambassador Nasser S. Al-Sabeeh stated: "The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the College of Europe and the growing collaboration with the College is a key outcome of the ongoing political dialogue between the State of Kuwait and the European Union, underscoring our shared commitment to advancing academic and scientific cooperation. In this spirit, a training course for Kuwaiti diplomats will be held in November 25-26, in cooperation with the College of Europe. We look forward to further strengthening this partnership and the bonds between our people.”
College of Europe Rector Federica Mogherini, mentioned: “The College of Europe is delighted to be partnering with the Saud AlNasser AlSabah Kuwait Diplomatic Institute. In recent years, we have developed a solid expertise in diplomatic training, in particular since we started hosting the European Union Diplomatic Academy. Sharing our expertise and helping reinforce the EU-Kuwait relationship by building the capacity of the Kuwaiti diplomatic service is a role we are honored to play.”
The EU Ambassador to Kuwait H.E. Anne Koistinen explained: “This Memorandum of Understanding opens the door to building more structured and regular collaboration between the College of Europe and Kuwait Diplomatic Institute, which could benefit both the European Union and for Kuwait. By joining forces, we can enrich the training of our diplomats, exchange expertise, and cooperate in facing global challenges together. The MoU is only the latest sign of an increased co-operation between the EU and Kuwait. In light of the upcoming Presidency of Kuwait of the GCC, the collaboration between the two institutions will be of special importance.”
This Memorandum of Understanding builds on the ongoing cooperation enjoyed between the Saud AlNasser AlSabah Kuwait Diplomatic Institute and the European Union since the establishment of the EU Delegation in Kuwait in 2019. Since then, the Saud AlNasser AlSabah Kuwait Diplomatic Institute and the European Union have jointly organized two study visits for Kuwaiti diplomats: one to the EU Institutions in Brussels earlier this year, and one to Abu Dhabi in 2022 for training on EU policies. The EU Delegation in Kuwait and the Saud AlNasser AlSabah Kuwait Diplomatic Institute had important events at the Diplomatic Institute in Kuwait including the lecture by the EU Special Representative for the Gulf region Luigi di Maio in July 2024, and the session with European External Action Service Deputy Secretary General Enrique Mora in June 2024.
