Marking International Migrants Day with Samir Karahoda’s Films: A Cinematic Tribute to Kosovo’s Story

To mark the International Migrants Day, EU in Kosovo and Europe House organised a screening of three of Samir Karahoda’s profound films, “On the Way,” “In Between,” and “Displaced,” at Kino ABC in Pristina on 18 December 2024. The event delved into themes of migration and displacement, followed by an engaging public talk with the film director.

On the Way portrays a 15-minute journey during which a father and son discuss migration, reflecting the challenges faced by Kosovar society today. In Between captures the phenomenon of families building identical houses in rural Kosovo, hoping for the return of loved ones who have emigrated abroad. Meanwhile, Displaced tells the award-winning story of two table tennis players in post-war Kosovo striving to keep their sport alive.

During the public talk, Samir shared insights into his creative process. He revealed how In Between was inspired by observing empty houses built by families for their members living abroad, while Displaced stemmed from the story of director friend's efforts to revive a table tennis club after years in exile. Samir’s son, Miron, co-writer and star of On the Way, shared personal reflections that shaped the film’s dialogues, encapsulating the emotions of Kosovo’s younger generations. Despite limited budgets, Samir’s films have earned international acclaim. The film director’s son, Miron, revived moments like witnessing the Kosovo flag at the Cannes Film Festival instilling pride and hope for Kosovo’s future.
