Europe Day Kenya Football Tournament

Teams from four counties battle for the EU Day trophy

There are two incredible sporting events taking place within the European Union in 2024. The 17th edition of the UEFA European Football Championship (UEFA EURO 2024) is set to take place in Germany from 14th June to 14th July 2024. The  Paris 2024 Olympic Games will take place in France from 26th July to 11thAugust 2024.

To mark these two amazing quadrennial international events, the European Union Delegation to Kenya together with its Member States and with the support of the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Sports and the Arts will host the inaugural Europe Day Kenya Football Tournament, to celebrate Europe Day with the youth.

Marsabit County Preliminaries

Preliminaries held on 26-27 March at Dakabaricha and Moi Girls School

During the weekend of 26-27 March 2024, Marsabit County hosted the first leg of the Europe Day Kenya Football Tournament.

Eight boys' teams and eight girls' teams, all between 15 and 18 years old, competed for the chance to advance through the competition.

The girls played at Moi Girls Secondary School, while the boys competed at Dakabaricha Mixed Secondary School.

The European Union Delegation to Kenya Deputy Ambassador Mr. Ondrej Simek and Marsabit County's Chief of Staff Mr. Adan Omar were at the opening.

Gadamoji High took the trophy for the boys, and Dakabaricha Mixed Secondary School won for the girls. Both teams are now heading to the semi-finals in Nairobi this May.

It was a great couple of days of football, but it was more than just a game. This tournament exemplifies the European Union's GlobalGateway and Team Europe spirit, showcasing how sports can bridge communities, foster youth development, and celebrate our shared values.

Homabay County Preliminaries

Preliminaries held on 6-7 April at the Raila Odinga Stadium

The Homa Bay County preliminaries of the Europe Day Kenya Football Tournament kicked off on 6th April 2024 at the Raila Odinga stadium.

The European Union Delegation to Kenya Deputy Ambassador Mr. Ondrej Simek was in Homa Bay at the start of the tournament, to encourage all the players in the tournament. The teams, made up of 8 boys teams and 8 girls teams, played with a spirit of determination and fairness.

Koballa Girls emerged winners in the girls category while Ringa boys took it home in their category.

Kilifi County preliminaries

Preliminaries will be held on 4-5 May at Malindi High School

The Kilifi County preliminaries of the Europe Day Kenya Football Tournament will kick off on 4-5 May at Malindi High School. The Kilifi County tournament is sponsored by the German Embassy in Kenya.

The event will mark the third round of the tournament.

As with previous matches, eight boys’ teams and eight girls' teams, all between 15 and 18 years old, will be competing. Participating teams in the female category include Mkongari Secondary, Mwangea Girls, Vyambari Secondary School, Ng’ombeni Girls, St. Johns’ Girls, Mtepeni Secondary, Kakoneni Girls, Kambeni Girls. The boys’ teams are Vitengeni Baptist, Malindi High, Kizurini High, Kajiwe High, Msumarini High, Mwarakaya, Galana High, Mkongani.

The winners will be heading to the semi-finals in Nairobi on 17 May.

Nairobi County Preliminaries

Preliminaries at Upper Hill School on 11-12 May 2024

The Nairobi County preliminaries of the Europe Day Kenya Football Tournament  kicked off on Saturday 11th May  at Upper Hill High School. The European Union Delegation appreciates the partnership of the Nairobi County Government and the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, for the fourth round of this tournament.

As with previous matches, eight boys’ teams and eight girls' teams, all between 15 and 18 years old, will be competing. Participating teams in the male category include hosts Upper Hill High School, Raila Educational Centre, Dagoretti Mixed, St. Patricks, Olympic School, Waylight School, Highway High and Our Lady of Fatima School. In the female category, participants include  Mwangaza, Kibera Girls, Huruma Girls, Dagoretti Mixed, Olympic, Our Lady of Fatima, Beth Mugo School and St Bhakita School.

The winners will be heading to the semi-finals in Nairobi on 17 May, and the finalists will win a trip to Romania, where they will attend a training session.
