DigiKen Initiative: Empowering Communities with Media, Information and Digital Literacy for Climate Action

The DigiKen Programme is a transformative 36-month initiative funded by the European Union and led by a consortium of UN agencies (UNESCO, UN Women, UNEP, UNCDF),  the Kenyan Ministry of ICT and the Digital Economy of Kenya with the aim of shaping a thriving digital platforms ecosystem in Kenya.

As part of the DigiKen Programme, AI for Planet and Media, Information and Digital Literacy (MIDL) are at the heart of this year’s World Radio Day 2025 theme: Radio and Climate Change. This initiative empowers communities with the digital skills and tools needed to tackle climate challenges.

At the time when new forms of climate denial, supported by AI, and accompanied by disinformation campaigns are emerging on digital platforms, and putting already vulnerable populations at risk of misinformation, providing access to accurate and reliable information and developing skills to navigate the online world have become critical.

With AI for Planet, local communities will learn to harness AI and digital tools to access critical climate information, make informed decisions, and adapt to environmental changes. Community champions will lead the way through digital innovation hubs, ensuring AI solutions are both locally relevant and accessible to all groups especially those living in climate risk areas.

At the same time, MIDL equips people with essential critical thinking and media literacy skills, helping them navigate the online world and fight against climate mis and disinformation, while protecting fundamental high rights of freedom of expression and access to information.

As we celebrate World Radio Day 2025, let’s recognize the power of radio in amplifying these efforts. Local stations are key to sharing verified climate information, inspiring action, and bridging the digital divide to build a more informed, resilient, and sustainable future—together.
