EU Centre officially opens at Universitas Airlangga

The European Union (EU) Centre at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) was officially inaugurated today as a joint initiative between the EU Delegation to Indonesia and UNAIR. Located on the 12th floor of the ASEEC Tower, Campus B, the EU Centre is designed to serve as a central hub for fostering academic collaboration and deepening understanding of the EU’s institutions, policies, and values. The EU Centre at UNAIR will provide students, scholars and the wider community with valuable resources on EU affairs, offering access to publications, information materials, and opportunities for academic and cultural exchange.

As part of this milestone, the EU and UNAIR also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), establishing a framework for enhanced collaboration. The MoU will facilitate a range of activities, including ambassador lectures, information sessions on EU-funded scholarships under the Erasmus and Horizon Europe programmes, visits to the premises of the EU Delegation in Jakarta, and internship opportunities for students.

“Indonesia and the EU share a common ambition to promote active peace and sustainable development, and to celebrate their respective cultural diversity. To act on this ambition, Universitas Airlangga and the EU Delegation in Indonesia have opened an EU Centre, a place to exchange ideas and experiences. This Centre will provide access to key resources about the EU, empowering Indonesian youths and academic communities,” said H.E. Denis Chaibi, EU Ambassador to Indonesia.

“To mark the 70th year anniversary this month, Universitas Airlangga is proud to host the first EU Centre in Indonesia on our campus. This initiative aligns with our vision to enhance global engagement and provide students with the best resources to succeed in a globalised world. The EU Centre will be a unique facility for expanding our students’ knowledge of European affairs and opening doors to new academic opportunities. Universitas Airlangga has maintained 57 partnerships with 45 institutions across 20 EU Member States. Through the EU Centre, we look forward to strengthening our collaboration with the EU and its Member States, and enhancing our partnership with universities in Europe” stated Prof. Dr Mohammad Nasih, SE., MT., Ak., Rector of Universitas Airlangga.

In celebration of the inauguration, relevant experts delivered an informational seminar on the EURAXESS joint-research opportunities and Erasmus+ scholarship programmes. In addition, the opening of the EU Centre presented a cultural show, highlighting both Indonesian and European rich traditions.

Looking ahead, the EU Centre at UNAIR will host a variety of events regularly, including lectures, discussions, seminars, workshops, competitions and cultural festivals, all aimed to enhance understanding of EU affairs and strengthen EU-Indonesia relations, while promoting people-to-people exchanges.
