Orange the World: EU in Iceland Joins Campaign To End Violence Against Women

On November 25, the EU Delegation to Iceland joined the global movement Orange the World to mark the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. This day also launched the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, a global initiative running until December 10, International Human Rights Day.

This year’s Orange the World theme is:
“Every 10 Minutes, a Woman is Killed. #NoExcuse. UNiTE to End Violence Against Women.”
The campaign highlights the alarming escalation of violence against women, with a specific focus on femicide—the killing of women by intimate partners or family members. Globally, every eleven minutes, a woman loses her life to such violence.

The EU Delegation to Iceland joined the global campaign by illuminating the EU Delegation's office in Reykjavík in orange and displaying the campaign's orange flag in front of the building. The Delegation shared a social media campaign calling for an end of violence against women.

The EU Ambassador and Delegation staff joined forces with other Ambassadors of EU Member States and embassy staff and participated jointly in a "UN Women Iceland's Light March". This powerful event brought together individuals and organisations in solidarity against gender-based violence.

In Iceland, landmarks including Harpa Concert Hall, Hallgrímskirkja, the University of Iceland, and the Government Offices were lit in orange to symbolize a future free of violence.

Violence against women isn’t just a crime—it’s a betrayal of our shared values of dignity, equality, and justice. It destabilizes societies, erodes human rights, and fuels inequality. It’s not a women's issue or a personal issue; it’s a political one. Change starts with us and it starts now. - Stefano Sannino, EEAS Secretary General

Through collective action, we can end violence against women and girls. Events like Orange the World remind us of the urgency to act and the power of solidarity.
