Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, Icelandic Minister for Foreign Affairs, visited Brussels on Wednesday 15 January 2025 and met with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Vice-President of the European Commission (HRVP) Kaja Kallas, as well as with EU Commissioner for Trade, Maroš Šefčovič, who is also responsible for EEA EFTA affairs.
During the meetings EU-Iceland relations, the EEA cooperation, and the state of play concerning Iceland's membership application were among topics discussed.
HRVP Kallas and Commissioner Šefčovič emphasised the importance of the EEA cooperation and its success over the past 30 years. The European Union confirmed that Iceland's application was still considered active as the application was never formally withdrawn. Should Iceland announce its inntention to the European Union to resume negotiations, it would be up to the Council of the European Union, the European Commission, and its Member States to decide the next steps based on the groundwork already laid.
