Omoa, Honduras, September 12th of 2024- Each year the European Union promotes the #EUBeachCleanp campaign with the aim of raising awareness to promote activism through concrete actions to protect our oceans.

This year, the EU in alliance with the youth organisation "Cipotes", the Centre for Marine Studies, and the project Caribe Circular, will hold a clean-up day at "Mar de Plata" beach in Omoa, on World Clean Up Day, on the 21st of september at 8am. This activity is part of a joint effort to protect the environment and raise awareness in the community about the importance of keeping our coasts clean and free of waste.

The activity is expected to gather near 200 volunteers that will collect waste from the beach. The recyclable material will be given to a group of women recyclers who were supported by the Caribe Circular project that addressed issues of plastic waste prevention in the seas of the Caribbean and Central America. This project was also funded by the EU and German cooperation.

We invite the community to join this initiative, which reflects teamwork and shared responsibility to preserve our beaches and marine environment. Just arrive with comfortable clothing for the activity.

Plastics in the ocean

Every year, millions of tonnes of waste end up in the ocean with a direct and deadly effect on wildlife such as seabirds, whales, fish and invertebrates, not to mention corals.Marine pollution starts on land and is one of the main reasons for the impoverishment of marine biodiversity. If we don't act now, by 2050 there will be more plastics than fish in the sea.
