Guyana Forest Partnership – Protect and Restore Mangrove Forests

30.01.2025

The "Guyana Forest Partnership – Protect and Restore Mangrove Forests" initiative aims to enhance Guyana's coastal resilience by protecting and restoring its mangrove ecosystems. This EU-funded project seeks to support local communities while ensuring sustainable economic opportunities linked to mangrove conservation. The project aims to protect and restore mangrove ecosystems by fostering regulatory development, institutional coordination, and sustainable community-driven economic activities, contributing to climate resilience and local economic growth.

The project is designed to protect and restore Guyana’s mangrove forests, which serve as natural defenses against coastal erosion and flooding. With a total EU budget of EUR 4.62 million, it focuses on improving institutional inter-agency coordination, strengthening regulatory frameworks—such as the Mangrove Action Plan (2022-2032) and the Sea and River Defence Sector Policy—and supporting community-driven mangrove-based economic activities, including honey production, eco-tourism, and sustainable fisheries. The project incorporates recommendations from the Guyana Green-Grey Engineering Guidance (GGGEG), ensuring a balanced approach between natural mangrove conservation and engineered coastal defenses.

This initiative builds upon the EU Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) budget support program (2017-2021) and continues over 20 years of EU involvement in coastal protection in Guyana. It aligns with the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030 and the National Mangrove Action Plan (2022-2032). The project is implemented through direct budget support, ensuring policy alignment and financial sustainability.

Key stakeholders include the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI), the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Public Works, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Guyana Forestry Commission, and local community groups.
