Consular protection is the help that an EU Member State can provide to its citizens if they need assistance abroad. Consular protection may be necessary in cases such as:

•  Need for emergency travel documents;
• Accident or serious illness;
• Emergency rescue and repatriation;
• Being a victim of a crime;
• Arrest or detention;
• Death

Portugal, France and Spain have embassies in Guinea-Bissau. Portugal and Spain also have consulates in the country. In addition, Germany has a representative office.

If your EU Member State does not have an embassy/consulate/honorary consul resident in Guinea-Bissau that can provide consular protection, you can request consular protection from another EU Member State.

Any EU citizen abroad whose Member State does not have local representation is entitled to consular protection by the diplomatic or consular authorities of any other Member State of the European Union.
