Reaching to the stars in Guatemala: EU Day “Connecting to the future”

Europe Day 2024 celebration in Guatemala

This year’s Europe Day in Guatemala was the talk of the week. Amazed Guests arrived in a star spangled galaxy through a LED tunnel with rotating satellites, where a robot welcomed them to the future. A series of stands showcased some of the EU’s most advanced technologies in satellite and digital development. Visitors were immersed by the Copernicus satellite observation system and its abundant opportunities, as well as by Bella II a gigantic submarine cable connecting Europe and South America, followed by impressive exhibits from companies like TIGO/Millicom, Ericsson, Hispasat and UFINET. Additionally, they learned about the very popular European academic exchange program Erasmus +, the top notch research and innovation program Horizon Europe, and the ambitious EUROCLIMA programme addressing climate change. DINAMICA II an initiative of seed capital to support SMEs implemented by CABEI and the KFW  and the EU project “Mancomunidades” executed by Italian ngo CISP that used augmented reality to show practical application of satellite data, raised a lot of interest.

We saw a diverse event that brought together all walks of life, from government, indigenous authorities, the diplomatic community, students, private sector, to grass root organisations, interacting with future opportunities and investments that Europe can offer under the Global Gateway initiative. Satellite images from Copernicus and the European Space Agency (ESA) came alive in a technological and futuristic environment with electronic music through DJ Wenfil, which made us dance away until the wee hours. To spread the word about Global Gateway, we will continue with our communication campaign  "Connecting cultures, building futures", which includes social media presence and billboards in the streets of Guatemala City, followed in July with another exhibition at one of the country's most popular cultural events FILGUA, the International Bookfair of Guatemala.
