Girls Takeover: Nuhamin Steps into the Role of EU Ambassador for a Day

As part of the global #GirlsTakeover initiative led by Plan International Ethiopia, Nuhamin Tibebu had the opportunity to become “Ambassador for the Day”. This initiative empowers girls by giving them the chance to step into leadership roles, demanding equal power, freedom, and representation.

Nuhamin began her day by shadowing Ambassador-Designate Sofie From-Emmesberger, gaining valuable insight into leadership and international diplomacy. She participated in key meetings with the Political section, learning about EU-Ethiopia relations, and joined a media meet-up focused on fostering relationships with Ethiopian media outlets & journalists.

After these meetings, Nuhamin delivered a powerful presentation on the role of education in eliminating violence against girls, stressing the importance of teaching both boys and girls about this issue from an early age, followed by an interactive Q&A session with EU staff that sparked a thoughtful discussion on how education can drive meaningful social change.

The day concluded with Nuhamin attending a EuroCham networking event, where she connected with Ambassadors, business leaders, and investors, further understanding the role of international partnerships in fostering economic growth and collaboration.

This inspiring experience not only gave Nuhamin a deeper understanding of leadership and diplomacy, but also underscored the power of initiatives like #GirlsTakeover to amplify the voices of young women in spaces where they are rarely seen or heard.

“This opportunity has strengthened my belief that girls can lead and excel.”
