EU Support Strengthens Ethiopian Civil Society through the Civil Society Fund III Programme

Since 2018, the European Union has reinforced its commitment to Ethiopian civil society through the Civil Society Fund III, a programme aimed at empowering civil society organisations (CSOs) to play a more active role in the country’s development and democratisation.

Over the past five years, the EU has allocated €16 million to 27 projects, supporting more than 60 CSOs in amplifying citizen voices, engaging in policy dialogue, and advocating for sustainable social change.

The programme provided financial support and focused on strengthening the operational and advocacy capacities of Ethiopian CSOs. Key areas of impact included gender equality, women's empowerment, and the promotion of democratic governance. Despite challenges in capacity building and policy influencing, the programme has made significant strides in aligning with Ethiopia's development goals.

An independent evaluation of the Civil Society Fund III highlighted these initiatives' success while identifying opportunities for further improvements, particularly in sustainability, efficiency, and collaboration. The EU remains committed to addressing these challenges and continues to support Ethiopian CSOs in their crucial role within the country's governance and development processes.
