The Erasmus+ Information Day held at the Ministry of Education
The Erasmus+ Information Day in Ethiopia was held on 22 November 2024, at the Ministry of Education in Addis Ababa. This event aimed to provide information about opportunities under the Erasmus+ programme, which supports education, training, youth, and sports across Europe and partner countries, including Ethiopia. The event was officially opened by H.E. Kora Tushune, State Minister of Education. In His Excellency’s remarks, the State Minister expressed his deep gratitude to the EU for its longstanding and strong commitment in supporting the higher education development endeavours of Ethiopia. The State Minister emphasized the importance of Erasmus+ in supporting Ethiopian students and institutions to engage in global academic and professional networks, fostering innovation and skill development.
In Her Excellency’s keynote address, the Ambassador-designate of the European Union to Ethiopia, H.E. Sofie From-Emmesberger, highlighted the EU's dedication to bolstering education and its long-standing partnership with Ethiopia, focusing on mutual growth in areas like education, trade, and regional peace.
Her Excellency noted that the Erasmus+ programme has opened doors for Ethiopian students to some of Europe’s best universities. Ethiopia is one of the top beneficiary countries of this programme and since 2004, Ethiopia has been – in this framework - one of the 10 best performing countries in the world, and amongst the top 5 in Africa both in terms of applications and, more importantly, student selection in the Erasmus Scholarship programme.
The event featured speakers from the European Commission and the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA). Additionally, participants heard testimonials from Ethiopian organizations that have previously benefitted from Erasmus+ initiatives. The agenda included discussions on new Erasmus+ developments and guidance on proposal preparation for those interested in applying.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the EU to enhance cooperation with Ethiopia across multiple sectors, including education, economic reform, and sustainable development.
