Enhancing the capacity of the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission in monitoring the criminal justice system
Objectives:
- Increased rule of law, respect for human rights, and access to justice for all.
- Increased respect for and protection of human rights in the Criminal Justice System of Ethiopia.
Project Activities:
Activities under this grant aim to build the capacity of the EHRC to conduct investigations and inquiries into pressing human rights issues linked to the criminal justice system within Ethiopia. Support is also envisaged for a public education campaign, using various print and non-print methods, to raise awareness and understanding of rights, particularly within the criminal justice system, and of the roles and functions of the Commission and other providers of legal aid and assistance. Using its unique position as a national human rights institution, the EHRC will also be supported to enhance access to legal aid and assistance provided by CSOs and legal aid clinics.
Expected Results:
- Enhanced capacity to provide oversight, to provide redress for victims of human rights violations under users of the criminal justice system, and to hold justice institutions to account.
- Increased coordination of the provision of legal aid in criminal cases by NGOs, university-based law clinics, and other legal aid service providers.
