Empowering School Clubs to Combat Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Early Marriage in Ethiopia

The EUTF - funded RESET Plus Family Planning Project, implemented by Amref Health Africa in the Afar region of Ethiopia, has established and trained school clubs that are now at the forefront of combating female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriage. These clubs play a crucial role in raising awareness among students and community members about FGM, early marriage, family planning, and other sexual and reproductive health (SRH) issues. By working closely with the school community, health workers, and partners, these initiatives aim to eliminate harmful practices among adolescents and youth.

Through this project, school clubs have been strengthened, health facilities equipped with family planning supplies, and health workers received extensive training. These efforts are all geared towards enhancing SRH services both within schools and in the wider community.

Nejat, Fafi, and Ibrahim, active members of the SRH school club at Hayu Primary and Secondary School in Dicheto, Elidear Woreda, Afar, shared their experiences: "The trainings were enriching and have positively shaped us. The facilities available to help us manage menstrual hygiene, and the safe spaces built for girls have helped them not to miss classes. Male students’ engagement in the club and their active participation in various SRH education sessions have made a big difference. Most now play supportive roles, which was inconceivable a few years ago.
