'Saving Eritrea's Printed Heritage'
Since 2019, the University of Pavia and the Research Documentation Centre (RDC) in Eritrea are jointly implementing a programme co-funded by the European Union to foster and improve the quality of Digital Cultural Heritage Initiatives (DCHI) in Eritrea. The key activities carried out are:
- Training, networking and awareness for organisation involved in the digital preservation of Eritrean Cultural Heritage
- Purchase of equipment to digitalise documents printed in Eritrea in the period 1867-1962
- Creation of the National Digital Library of Eritrea. This activity aimed at digitizing and publish online the documents printed in Eritrea in the period 1867-1962
The project also aims to bolster the Research and Documentation Center's capacity to design, develop, and implement robust policies and actions for the digital preservation of Eritrea's rich cultural heritage.
This project's target group is extensive and inclusive, encompassing archives, libraries, museums, and other memory organisations; government agencies; community groups documenting their histories; local and regional authorities; civil society; information professionals; researchers; practitioners; students; and the public at large. It also extends to cultural and heritage organisations in neighbouring countries, fostering a spirit of regional cooperation and mutual support.
