#EUBeachCleanup: The EU and the Municipality of Quito Join Forces to Protect Water Resources
The European Union and the Secretariat of Environment of the Metropolitan District of Quito conducted a cleanup of the Santa Ana ravine, located in Mitad del Mundo (San Antonio de Pichincha). This initiative was carried out as part of the activities that the EU Climate Diplomacy undertakes within the framework of the global #EUBeachCleanUp campaign, aimed at cleansing beaches and water bodies worldwide to promote responsible behavior towards these resources.
Speaking about this endeavor, the Ambassador of the European Union in Ecuador, Charles-Michel Geurts, expressed: "I am hearthened by the commitment of the citizens and the interest that this campaign arouses each year, now in its fifth consecutive year. This time, we want to draw attention to the problem of trash in ravines, which represents an environmental and social harm affecting the health, biodiversity, and quality of life of people dependent on these ecosystems."
According to Mónica Reinoso, Director of the Environmental Fund, "the Municipality of Quito, through the companies responsible for waste management, sanitation, and drinking water, alongside Parish Councils, undertakes ravine cleaning programs periodically as part of the measures this administration takes to address climate phenomena, promote resilience in the territory, improve water quality, and protect the environment. Active community participation is essential to achieve effective results," she stated.
Throughout the event, 720 pounds / 326.58 kg of solid waste were collected, more than 200 people participated, including community residents, EU officials in Ecuador, diplomats, authorities, personnel from the Secretariat of Environment of the Metropolitan District of Quito, and students from América Latina, Alessandro Volta, and La Condamine schools.
The European Union remains steadfast in its commitment to combatting climate change through a multilateral approach, encompassing financial support, diplomatic dialogues, technical assistance, cooperation, and the development of projects.
