EU Statements at the Council of Europe in January 2024

In January 2024, the European Union delivered two statements at the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers meetings on the Commissioner for Human Rights' visit to Armenia and Azerbaijan, and the recent execution in the United States.

 

On 17 January 2024, the EU delivered a statement at the Committee of Ministers meeting welcoming the "Observations of the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights on the Human Rights Situation of People affected by the Conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the Karabakh region”, following her visit to Armenia and Azerbaijan in October 2023. The EU called on Armenia and Azerbaijan to endorse the observations and implement the recommendations made the Commissioner.

On 30 January 2024, the EU delivered a statement at the Committee of Ministers meeting on the execution of Mr Kenneth Eugene Smith carried out in the State of Alabama in the United States on 25 January 2024. The EU called for states that maintain the death penalty to implement a moratorium and move towards abolition, in line with the worldwide trend.
