In the 1980s and 1990s, consumers use to pay a deposit when buying soft drinks or beers, and get the deposit back when the empty bottle was returned to the store. This practice has been widely used in China. It now became an environmental policy approach called DRS (Deposit Refund Systems) which is widely applied in Europe, in the Americas and World other regions to promote producer responsibility and improve the collection and recycling of packaging waste. Is DRS still applicable for China now? Through carrying out a pilot in Xiamen, our cooperation Project did a feasibility study and draw some lessons.
