Speech by the EU Ambassador Jorge Toledo at the launching event of the orange solidarity tree

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Honored guests, esteemed colleagues, friends, and fellow allies in the fight against gender-based violence,

It is an honor to stand before you on this significant occasion. Today, November 25th, we commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, or as we know it, Orange Day. On this day, we are united under one color and one cause: to stand up and be brave against the pervasive shadow of violence against women worldwide. This is a universal challenge that transcends borders, cultures, and communities. And so, as we gather here at the European Union Delegation, we carry a collective responsibility and a shared commitment, a commitment that unites and empowers us, to eliminate the unacceptable.

We must acknowledge that violence is a complex and devious force. Its manifestations are numerous—physical, emotional, economic—and its impact is profound and scarring. It affects every victim, notwithstanding race, background, and financial status, reminding us that the struggle against violence is not one of “them” but of “us,” of our societies, our institutions, and too often of our own circle.

So, where do we stand as individuals? Each of us, in some way, encounters moments where we may witness acts of gender-based violence. As bystanders, we are unsure of our role— as we are hesitant to speak, or act. Gender-based violence thrives in a culture of silence, and that silence often kills. But within each of us lies the potential to become a positive actor for change and justice. We are all part of this story, and as such, we all have the power to shape its course. And here, men have a vital role in challenging and changing the norms and behaviors that perpetuate gender-based violence. For too long, gender-based violence has been seen as a ‘women’s issue,’ but we know this is not the case. It is crucial that men actively  play their part in break this silence—not just by refraining from violence, but by becoming allies and advocates who speak out against harmful norms, challenge misogyny in everyday conversations, and promote equality in all spaces.

Today, our message is clear: gender-based violence has no place in our world. We must address these injustices in every space where women are at risk, as we must create an environment where women are ensured to be safe and can live their lives with dignity and freedom. While we have made significant strides in this direction, there is still much work to be done.

The European Union and its Member States remain unwavering in their commitment to ending violence against women. We stand united, not only within Europe but with partners across the world, in our mission to prevent and eliminate gender-based violence. This is not just about implementing policies—it’s about protecting lives, restoring dignity, and ensuring that every woman and girl can live free from fear. Our initiatives are driven by more than just a sense of duty; they stem from a deep and personal recognition of the pain, trauma, and injustice endured by countless women. Each policy reflects our shared values of equality, integrity, and human rights, and is part of our profound responsibility to bring real, lasting change to the lives of those affected. We will not rest until every woman, everywhere, is safe, supported, and empowered.

As I conclude, I invite you all to join me in a meaningful gesture. Later, together with my esteemed colleague from UN Women, we will hang solidarity messages on the “Orange Solidarity Tree” in the Delegation’s Garden. This simple act marks the persistence of our commitment, a testament to the resilience and unity of all that stand against violence. May this tree expand and grow with the strength transmitted by our collective resolve, and may its branches spread hope and solidarity.

Let us go forward, not only as diplomats and advocates but also as individuals who believe that a world free of violence is within our reach, and thus, a product of all of our actions. Thank you for being here, your commitment, and the change you are part of creating.

Thank you.

It is my great pleasure to introduce my dear friend and colleague (UN speaker), whose work with UN Women has been inspiring and crucial in this fight. I welcome her to the stage to share her insights and inspire us all.
