On 1 November 2021, EU Ambassador to China Mr. Nicolas Chapuis formally launched the “Sustainability Tour 环保好骑心” online campaign.

This online campaign is initiated by the EU Delegation to China, and will be enrichened by the active participation of Steve and Rose, two young people who are interested in environmental protection and sports. In the past, they have been involved in projects carried out by the European Union in Beijing and Shanghai, and are also willing to learn more about other projects across the country. In order to reduce carbon emissions, they chose to organize “Sustainability Tour 环保好骑心” activities online, calling on like-minded young people from all over the country to ride bicycles and visit local projects. The selected young people will share what they have seen, heard, and experience from all over the country through video as well as live interaction with Steve and Rose. Steve and Rose will kick off the nationwide cycling activities in Shanghai and Beijing respectively, and all the video content produced by KOLs will be included under #环境好骑心# topic on Weibo.

At 15:00 on 1 November, Ambassador Chapuis formally launched the “Sustainability Tour 环保好骑心” online campaign at the EU Delegation and welcomed guests from the EU and its Member States, China, as well as relevant media and influencers. In his remarks, he expressed the wish that through the Sustainability Tour, people in China might learn more about what sustainability means, and discuss ways for European and Chinese people to work together for a more sustainable world. He noted that the EU and China have plenty of opportunities to cooperate, since both share a commitment to global sustainable development, the implementation of Agenda 2030 and the Paris Agreement.

The two main influencers engaged in the campaign – Rose and Steve – attended the launch at the EU Delegation, where they have received the official cycling wear of the “Sustainability Tour 环保好骑心” online campaign from Ambassador Chapuis.

In a Q&A session with media, Rose and Steve shared their hopes of encouraging more young people to join their tour, which promotes personal actions for environmental protection by riding bicycles between projects. It presents a variety of cooperation among the EU, its Member States and China through relevant projects in sustainable development. It also showcases some special cycling lanes across China.

Between 1 November and 13 December, the public will be able to follow the stories of Rose, Steve and their friends through several episodes published on social media and on the EU Delegation’s own channels.

Ambassador Chapuis’ remarks

at the launch of the “Sustainability Tour 环保好骑心” online campaign

(01 November 2021)

Dear colleagues, media guests,

All friends joining us online,

Ladies & gentlemen,

I am very happy to speak to you today and announce the launch of the Sustainability Tour.

The Sustainability Tour is organised by the Delegation of the European Union to China and is a campaign to celebrate cooperation between the EU, EU Member States and China in projects that foster sustainability in our societies and economies.

The Chinese name of our campaign 环保好骑心suggests that we will address environment issues. Yesterday, the UN Conference on Climate COP26 was opened in Glasgow, Scotland, so this is the perfect time for a discussion about actions to fight climate change. The EU will continue to show that the world can cut emissions and prosper at the same time.

In Europe, emissions were cut by 30% since 1990, while the economy grew more than 50%. The European Green Deal is the world’s most advanced blueprint for reducing emissions and becoming climate neutral. We hope that our policies can inspire other countries around the world to take action as well.

The EU and China are committed to working together and with other Parties to strengthen the effective implementation of the Paris Agreement. Both the EU and China acknowledge the existential challenge that climate change and biodiversity pose to humankind.

Despite the progress achieved, we know that current commitments are not sufficient to achieve the targets set by Paris Agreement and to reduce significantly biodiversity loss. Reforming our economies to ensure a successful transition toward climate neutrality and a greater protection of natural capital is a daunting task, but we have no other choices than redoubling our efforts to achieve it before it is too late.

Sustainability is much more that climate and environment protection. Sustainability is also about poverty, gender inequality, peace, justice, health, education. In 2015, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by all United Nations Member States. There are 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing countries - in a global partnership. With less than 10 years left to achieve the 2030 Agenda, the world is not on track and the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing inequalities even further, sometimes reversing the progress made on certain goals. Climate change, gender inequality, and poverty are the most pressing issues. The world needs political will and ambition in order to recover better.

The Sustainable Development Goals are an intrinsic part of the political programme of the European Commission. Not only within the EU, also as part of our international partnerships, the EU is committed to promoting and enforcing sustainability principles. This agenda offers plenty of opportunities for EU-China cooperation, because the EU and China share a commitment in global sustainable development, the implementation of Agenda 2030 and the Paris Agreement.

Dear friends,

I hope that through the Sustainability Tour we can learn more about the meaning of sustainability and discuss ways for people of the EU and China to work together for a more sustainable world.

Finally, I wish that our partner influencers can have fun during their visits to our EU and EU Member States’ projects, not forgetting all health and safety precautions. Be safe and sustainable!

Thank you!
