Under the framework of the third phase of the EU-China Dialogue on Migration and Mobility Support Project (MMSP III), funded by the European Union, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission in the People’s Republic of China on 17 October organized a workshop on practical cooperation on returns and readmissions in Beijing.

This event, opened by Mr Mattias Lentz, Deputy Head of Delegation of the European Union to China, provided Chinese and European participants with a platform to exchange experiences on returns and readmission processes and current EU-China cooperation on the topic. Participants included Chinese government agencies, the Delegation of the European Union to China, and EU Member States and Schengen Associated States. The Directorate General for Migration and Home Affairs of the European Commission (DG HOME) and several experts from EU Member States also participated virtually.

The activity provided an opportunity to acquire a better understanding of relevant systems and processes, and allowed parties to discuss operational cooperation on returns and readmissions. The participants exchanged insights on existing good practices, referring namely to return and readmission agreements and arrangements with countries of origin and transit, as well as the rules contained in Annex 9 of the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation. Participants underlined the importance of practical cooperation between EU Member States’ and Chinese authorities responsible for return.

Prior to this workshop, visits by EU Member States representatives to the Beijing Capital International Airport and the Document Examination Center were arranged in collaboration with the National Immigration Authority.
