The Delegation of the European Union issues the following statement together with the embassies and High Commissions of the EU Member States to Australia.

Today, the ambassadors and High Commissioners from the European Union in Canberra stand together to insist there can be no room for homophobia, biphobia and transphobia anywhere in the world.

They reiterate the message of yesterday’s ministerial level statement that equality, freedom and justice apply to everyone regardless of their actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity.

The EU sees Australia as a like-minded and important partner in pursuing this objective.

The ambassadors and High Commissioners underline their determination to continue expanding cooperation with Australian government and civil society partners, building on the momentum gained since EU Commissioner for Equality, Helena Dalli’s participation in the Sydney WorldPride.

The EU appreciates cooperation with Australia in UN human rights forums. The EU and Australia are increasing exchanges on addressing the rise in hate speech. The EU and civil society organisations exchange information on identifying and addressing discrimination. They also celebrate good news stories, including at the recent Pride in Sport event.

Inclusive policies make a difference. Together with Australian partners, the EU Delegation and the embassies and High Commissions of EU Member States in Canberra will continue working to build, not just imagine, a world in which equality thrives and every person can reach their full potential and live free and equal.
