European Union Village Welcomes Thousands in Canberra

On Saturday, 8th February, 23 European countries — including EU Member States, Norway, and Switzerland — came together to host the annual EU Village, celebrating the best of Europe.
Thousands of visitors explored the European way of life through the popular EU Passport activity, which encouraged them to visit each country's stall, learn about different cultures, and discover their favourite European destinations.
ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr who opened the village alongside Team Europe Ambassadors, said he was thankful to all European partners for the support for Canberra.
'The last weeks have been somewhat volatile in the world's politics and diplomacy, so I get the sense that EU-Australia relations are going to be incredibly important as a key factor of strength, stability, freedom, and democracy — all the things our countries collectively hold dear. From the ACT's perspective, we strongly value the social and cultural partnerships, but we also recognise the economic contribution that the EU and its Member States make to our economy. The extent of connections between Canberra and the EU is extensive, and we look to build on those,' the Chief Minister said.
Opening the EU Village, EU Delegation Head of Trade Ms Joanna Pocztowska highlighted the National Multicultural Festival as a fantastic opportunity to celebrate Australia's cultural diversity and thanked the organisers for hosting such a successful event.
'The ACT community embraces diversity and inclusion, making it a great place for many people, including Europeans, to live and work. Thank you for that. Today, through cultural exchange at this event, we strengthen our shared commitment to democracy, freedom, and human rights — values that are becoming even more important,' Ms Pocztowska said.
