Travel to the European Union
Citizens of Chile do not require a visa for short visits (less than 90 days) to EU member countries for tourism, family visits, or education/training. During this time, no paid economic activity may be carried out.
The countries that are part of the Schengen area that can be visited without a visa are Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
It is recommended that you check the exact requirements of the country you are visiting. For more information, visit the website or contact the embassy or consulate of the EU country you plan to visit.
Here you will find more information and helpful tips for your trip to the European Union.
In 2025 (exact date yet to be defined), the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will become operational, meaning that some 1.4 billion people from more than 60 visa-exempt countries, including Chile, will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization to enter most European countries. ETIAS is not yet operational and applications are not being accepted at the moment.
Study in the European Union
Universities in European Union countries are among the oldest and most prestigious in the world and are a popular destination for Chileans who want to study abroad
Between 2015-2023, more than 1,700 people participated in mobility programs between the EU and Chile thanks to Erasmus+, the European Union's programme for academic mobility and cross-border cooperation projects in education.
Each year Erasmus+ offers four main types of programmes:
- Study abroad: International Credit Mobility (ICM) offers opportunities for students, researchers and university staff to study abroad for a duration of 3-12 months within Erasmus+ Programme countries. It is important to note that, to access this opportunity, both the higher education institutions of origin and destination must have an inter-institutional agreement between them.
- Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree: An Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) is a prestigious, integrated, international study program that allows you to earn a joint master's degree from two or more higher education institutions in Europe.
- Capacity Building Projects: Erasmus+ capacity building projects aim to modernise higher education institutions, develop new curricula and build relationships between institutions.
- Jean Monnet Activities: Jean Monnet Activities aim to promote excellence in teaching and research on EU studies around the world, and foster dialogue between academics and policymakers on EU policies through activities such as modules, chairs and centres of excellence on EU-related topics.
- Other funding opportunities include the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions for doctoral education and postdoctoral training and research grants from the European Research Council.
In the Erasmus+ Program Guide and in these informative videos you can find more information about all Erasmus+ programs.
