Message from the Ambassador of the European Union in Chile
Welcome to the Delegation of the European Union (EU) in Chile! On this page you can find information about the activities that our diplomatic mission carries out in the country, as well as about the current situation of the EU in general and its actions in the world.
Chile was the first country in Latin America to have an office of the then-European Community, which was established in Santiago in 1964. Since then, profound changes have occurred in Chile, in the EU and in the world. The strong bilateral relationship between Chile and the EU has developed based on shared values and interests and a similar vision of the world and of development. Currently, the EU and its Member States are the leading investor in Chile and its third trading partner.
The Advanced Framework Agreement (AFA), which was signed in December 2023 and approved by the European Parliament and the Chilean Congress in 2024, modernises the 2002 Association Agreement and will further strengthen our close relationship in all its dimensions: political dialogue, trade and investment, and cooperation. The interim Trade Agreement will enter into force on February 1, 2025.
In today's world, Chile and the EU are key partners in strengthening our commitment to democracy and the rule of law, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, peace and security. We share a common vision of the challenges we must face, on issues such as the defence of democracy, multilateralism and human rights in the world, including gender equality and the empowerment of women. Likewise, we both advocate for sustainable development and the fight against climate change.
Chile and the EU work together for sustainable and inclusive prosperity, including through the Global Gateway investment agenda that promotes a fair, green and digital transition. In Chile, the EU has key initiatives in: renewable hydrogen (through the Team Europe Initiative), sustainable raw materials value chains, and the digital transition. Within the framework of the EU-LAC Digital Alliance, Chile and the EU use a human-centred approach to work together on: the Copernicus Regional Centre, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and data protection. We will also renew our focus on science, technology, research, and innovation-oriented cooperation.
We are also aligned with Chile in its concern about security and organized crime, and we are working together through, for example, the bi-regional cooperation program El PAcCTO (which seeks to contribute to security and justice in Latin America and the Caribbean by supporting the fight against organized transnational crime), as well as through the COPOLAD and EUROFRONT programmes.
Together with the EU Member States, the Delegation works with Chile and its different actors, including the Chilean government, the National Congress, civil society, academia, and the private sector to implement an agenda to overcome the global challenges we both face and to benefit all our citizens.
