Consular Protection for EU citizens

Information for EU/ Schengen citizens in need of assistance in emergency

Nationals of the European Union (EU) and Schengen Member States in need of consular assistance in Bangladesh should make contact with the Embassies/ Consulates of their respective countries. The emergency contacts in EU/ Schengen Embassies in Dhaka and in New Delhi (in case they cover Bangladesh from India) are listed below. You are also invited to consult the travel advice available on the websites of those Embassies, which are regularly updated.

Any EU citizen in a non-EU country where his/ her own national State has no representation is entitled to protection by the diplomatic or consular authorities of any other EU country. EU citizens in such a situation are entitled to protection under the same conditions as the nationals of that other EU country.

In Bangladesh, seven EU Member States have a resident Embassy. Some of them have concluded representation agreements with another EU Member State. If your country has no Embassy in Dhaka please consult your own national Embassy in Delhi first to find out which Embassy in Dhaka you should contact.

EU and Schengen Member States cooperate closely locally on consular protection matters through a constant exchange of information, crisis preparedness and collective action when needed in case of consular crises such as natural disasters. The EU Delegation assists actively this cooperation.

Visa to visit the EU for citizens of Bangladesh

If you are planning a short stay in a European Union (EU) country, you may need a visa depending on your nationality and on the rules in the country you wish to travel to

For 26 European countries in what is called the 'Schengen area', a Schengen visa is issued for short stays, allowing its holder to travel and stay there for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The 26 countries are:

  • 22 EU countries: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.
  • 4 non-EU countries: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

Bangladesh citizens require a visa to enter the Schengen area. To apply, please check with the embassy of the EU country which will be your main destination. If it is not clear what the main destination country is, apply at the embassy of the country where you will have the longest visit. If the visits to different Schengen countries are for the same amount of time, the first destination will be the determining factor.

A Schengen visa is not appropriate for stays longer than 90 days, or if you plan to get a job or set up a business, trade, or profession. In these cases, you will need to obtain a visa from the national authorities in the country concerned.

Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Ireland and Romania are outside the Schengen area. These five EU countries have their own rules for issuing short-stay visas. For short-stay visa information here, check with the respective embassies.

The Delegation of the European Union does not issue visas.

To apply for a visa – contact the relevant embassy from the List of Schengen Visa issuing Embassies on this page.
